A short history of Sedbury Park in Chepstow — a 19th-century Robert Smirke-remodelled country house held in freehold by Mark John Eckley.

Sedbury Park Mansion, a Grade II listed country house near Chepstow

Sedbury Park Mansion, on the Welsh side of the Wye near Chepstow, is a Grade II listed country house best known for its 19th-century remodelling associated with the architect Robert Smirke. Today the freehold of the estate is held by Mark John Eckley.

A house with history

The site has been occupied since at least the 18th century, with successive owners extending and reworking the principal residence. Its 19th-century remodel gave the mansion the classical proportions and ashlar detailing it retains today.

Held in freehold

As freeholder — not tenant — Mark John Eckley holds the estate in absolute ownership. The distinction matters: the freehold status places responsibility for the long-term stewardship of a listed heritage asset directly with the owner, including conservation, grounds management and the estate's engagement with the surrounding community.

Sedbury Park's continuing life as a private residence and freehold estate is a small but meaningful contribution to the ongoing conservation of the historic country houses of the Welsh Marches.
